All about this class

Building Strong Foundations with Scratch

In this class, we build up a strong foundation in Scratch, a visual programming language created specifically for kids. Scratch is a block-based programming language where kids learn to code through a simple drag-and-drop visual interface, lowering the barriers to learning for kids who aren’t yet proficient with using a keyboard. Scratch is simple, yet powerful; you’ll be amazed at what your child will create!

With just a foundational understanding of Scratch, your child will learn how to create their own games, animations, stories, quizzes… with coding superpowers, your imagination’s the limit!

What your child will learn with Scratch?
– The core Scratch building blocks such as Motion, Looks, Sound, Events, Control, and Variables and how to use them to bring their imagination to life.
– Key programming concepts such as sequences, and loops, conditionals.
– Creative problem-solving skills by designing and programming their own interactive stories, games and animations.
– Computational thinking as they plan and execute coding sequences to achieve specific outcomes.
– Storytelling skills as they create narratives and characters within their Scratch projects.
– A solid foundation for future programming languages and coding environments.

Unleashing Your Creativity with LEGO Education

We apply what your child has learned about coding in Scratch in the real world as we explore the world of robotics and mechanics with LEGO Education Spike. As we get tinkering with hardware and code, we’ll learn about how gears, motors and sensors work together to trigger action and movement. Afterwards, share your ideas and discoveries with your new friends!

We’ll create awesome creations such as a break dancing robot, a smart bike, a pedometer, and much more! Each creation will also teach your child about core scientific concepts such physics, engineering, and maths, all while having fun and fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

What your child will learn with LEGO Education?
– Exposure to real world applications of programming by controlling physical objects.
– Discover how code and hardware synergise in robotics – learn how hardware and code interface with each other.
– Build collaborative and communication skills as you work with your new friends.
– Develop understanding of sensors as they incorporate sensors into their robotic projects.
– Encourage critical thinking as children strategise and optimise their robots’ performance.
– A strong foundation for future learning in various fields, including robotics and engineering.
– Children learn to adapt and iterate on their designs and programs based on feedback and real-world testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who is this class designed for?
This class is great for all children aged 10-12. No prior experience with programming or digital devices (e.g. iPads) needed.
  2. What’s the format of this course?
Future Innovators is a weekly programme specially designed for 10-12 year olds to develop an understanding of tech! Each term of classes consists of 8 weekly lessons that are one hour long.
  3. My child is new to computers and programming. Will he / she be able to follow?
Of course! Most of our students come in with no prior programming knowledge and still produce awesome projects at the end of the term. Scratch and LEGO Education are a great introduction to world of coding and creating.
  4. Can my child join in the next term of classes if s/he missed out on the previous term?
Absolutely! Our term classes are designed to welcome new students at the start of every term. Do note however that we’re unable to include new students to an ongoing term as the lessons are progressive, so do sign up early to reserve your spot!
  5. What equipment will my child need?
We’ll provide all equipment and materials.
  6. Are these classes available online?
We care deeply about optimising the learning experience of every child that passes through our doors, and for young learners we believe that in-person learning works best.
  7. My child is younger than 10. Can s/he join?
This class and the tools and languages we cover were designed for 10-12 year olds. We encourage you to consider our Young Creators class which is designed specifically for 7-9 year olds.
  8. My child has done some Scratch programming at school. Should he/she still attend this course?
If you’re not too sure how much your child knows about Scratch programming, email us a link to your child’s Scratch profile and we can take a look and advise you.
  9. What if my child misses a class in the term?
We offer one makeup class per term for students who have missed due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances. Given the structure of our classes, makeup sessions may be arranged outside of the regular term or our standard class hours.
